PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Three professors at Brown University have been elected members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
David Cane is a professor of chemistry, Rose McDermott teaches political science and Walter Strauss is a professor of applied mathematics. They will be officially inducted as members of the independent policy research center in October at a ceremony at the Academy's headquarters in Cambridge, Mass.
The university says the three are among 198 individuals in this year's membership class. Members come from academia, the arts and the areas of business and public affairs.
Academy President Leslie Berlowitz says election to the Academy honors individual accomplishments and calls on members to serve the public good.
The Academy was founded during the American Revolution by John Adams and other leaders of the day.
