PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Rhode Island's treasurer says an audit of the state's disability pension system found that six public retirees received more than half a million dollars in wrongful disability pension payments dating back to 2001.
Treasurer Gina Raimondo announced the findings Wednesday. She says the payments to the six retirees have been suspended and that authorities are investigating to determine whether criminal charges are warranted. All told, the six people received $559,000 over what they should have.
Raimondo says the overpayments were identified by auditors reviewing the state's disability pension system. The auditors reviewed 833 pension files.
The Democrat says the state's retirement board is in negotiations to hire an independent investigator to conduct further reviews.
