PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Seventy-three percent of enrollees in Rhode Island's new health insurance marketplace in the first month signed up for Medicaid rather than private insurance plans.

HealthSource RI and the state Health and Human Services Office reported Tuesday that 3,213 enrollments out of 4,405 from Oct. 1 through Nov. 2 were for the Medicaid program. Just under 1,200 signed up for one of 28 commercial plans being offered on the marketplace, also known as an exchange.

Rhode Island is among several dozen states that are expanding Medicaid as part of the federal health care overhaul.

The rollout of the federal health care portal, healthcare.gov, has been plagued by problems. The launch of the state-run exchange in Rhode Island has been much smoother.
