PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A spokesman says Providence Mayor Angel Taveras is planning to announce he will run for governor.

Taveras' campaign spokesman Peter Baptista confirmed Thursday night that the Democratic mayor will make a formal announcement on Monday.

Taveras has said he was considering a run. So has another prominent Democrat, state Treasurer Gina Raimondo.

Incumbent Gov. Lincoln Chafee isn't running for reelection.

Republican Cranston Mayor Allan Fung also is considering a gubernatorial run and has an unspecified announcement planned Nov. 4.

Moderate Party founder Ken Block Ken Block has already launched his bid, and has said that he would consider running as a Republican.
