PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Ernie Almonte has decided to run for treasurer as an independent rather than a Democrat.

The ex-auditor general had been running in the Democratic primary against former Treasurer Frank Caprio and newcomer Seth Magaziner. Magaziner is the son of former Clinton administration policy adviser Ira Magaziner.

Almonte filed paperwork to run unaffiliated on Wednesday, the last day for candidates to file.

Caprio is the Democratic Party's endorsed candidate. The winner of the Sept. 9 primary will face Almonte in November. No Republican filed to run.

WPRI-TV reports that state GOP Chair Mark Smiley says he urged Almonte to run as a Republican and that the party thinks he should have been a Republican all along.

The incumbent treasurer, Gina Raimondo, is seeking the Democratic nomination for governor.
