WOONSOCKET, R.I. (AP) — State Rep. Lisa Baldelli-Hunt has defeated incumbent Mayor Leo Fontaine in Tuesday's municipal election in Woonsocket.
Unofficial results from the city showed Baldelli-Hunt got 66.6 percent of the vote, 4,372 votes to 2,128 for Fontaine.
Baldelli-Hunt had easily beaten Fontaine and two other candidates in a mayoral primary last month. As the two top vote-getters, she and Fontaine advanced to the general election. The race was non-partisan.
Baldelli-Hunt, a Democrat, is in her fourth term in the General Assembly. Fontaine, a Republican, has served two terms as mayor.
Woonsocket has been placed under the oversight of a state-appointed budget commission because of its troubled finances. The commission has sharply raised property taxes.
