PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The fatal beating of a convicted sex offender in Providence has been ruled a homicide.

Sixty-eight-year-old Milton Lyles was found beaten on the 300 block of Broad Street on May 19 and died at Rhode Island Hospital on June 12. The Providence Journal reports the state medical examiner's office concluded that Lyles died of blunt head trauma and complications.

Providence Police Major David Lapatin told the newspaper police have a suspect in the attack on Lyles, but no one has been formally charged.

Lyles lived near the crime scene. Police and court records show he was a registered sex offender with criminal records in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

His death was the eighth homicide in Providence this year.
