PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Block is expected to win the formal backing of the party's 2010 nominee for the office.

Block is holding a news conference with John Robitaille at the Statehouse on Tuesday.

Block's opponent in the Sept. 9 primary, Cranston Mayor Allan Fung, has consistently accused Block of costing the GOP the gubernatorial election four years ago. He says Block, who ran as the candidate of the Moderate Party, siphoned votes from Robitaille.

Then-independent Lincoln Chafee squeaked out a victory, winning 36 percent of the vote to Robitaille's nearly 34 percent. Democrat Frank Caprio got 23 percent, while Block got 6.5 percent.

Robitaille was the Rhode Island chairman of Mitt Romney's 2012 presidential campaign.

Fung has said he's the only "real" Republican in the race.
