Boston marathon survivor Heather Abbott to speak at Salve

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — A Newport resident who lost part of her left leg in the Boston Marathon bombings will talk about her experience at Salve Regina University in her hometown.

Heather Abbott is scheduled to address the campus community Wednesday evening.

Abbott was waiting in line to get into a crowded restaurant when the bombs went off at the marathon in April, leaving her badly injured. She was carried to safety by former New England Patriot Matt Chatham and his wife, who were at the restaurant for a fundraiser. Doctors amputated Abbott's left leg below the knee.

The event is part of Salve Regina's campus activities board spotlight series.

Abbott is a Rhode Island native who grew up in Lincoln.
