SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) — University of Rhode Island campus police will soon carry guns.

School President David Dooley made the announcement Monday. He says the decision was made "to provide the safest environment possible" on URI's campuses and to ensure a timely response to any safety threat.

The university says it is currently the only public university in the country where campus police do not carry firearms.

It plans to release a detailed implementation next month for members of the campus community to review. They will start rolling out the policy in June, and the university says it expects to have the policy fully in place by the spring semester of next year.
