PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The head of Rhode Island's Democratic Party has resigned suddenly with six weeks to go before the state's primaries and 3½ months to go before the general election.

The Providence Journal reports Tuesday David Caprio said the position is demanding and time-consuming, especially in an election year, and that he doesn't have the time to serve.

He said in a statement there are numerous, talented Democrats running this cycle and that he can't "dedicate the necessary time and energy to assist them in their respective campaigns."

Caprio says he's appreciative of the opportunity to serve.

WJAR-TV reported Monday that state police are investigating the awarding of a concession contract for three state beaches that went to Caprio.
