PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Gov. Lincoln Chafee says he is considering a "Plan B'' for his nomination for interim higher education commissioner after his first pick was criticized by government watchdog groups.
Chafee said Tuesday that he still wants Eva-Marie Mancuso to serve as commissioner but is considering alternatives in case the state Ethics Commission determines she cannot hold the position.
Mancuso is now chairwoman of Rhode Island's Board of Education.
Critics of the nomination say Mancuso's appointment would violate an ethics provision that prohibits certain officials, for one year, from serving in paid positions requiring approval from the body on which they serve.
Mancuso is asking the Ethics Commission for an exemption to the rule.
House Speaker Gordon Fox also criticized the nomination Tuesday and called for a national search for candidates.
