Chafee intends to make endorsement in RI gov.'s race

CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee (CHAY'-fee) says he plans to make an endorsement in the race to succeed him as governor, but hasn't made up his mind yet which candidate he will support.

Chafee switched from being an independent to being a Democrat earlier this year and said during a taping of WJAR-TV's 10 News Conference on Thursday that he will endorse a fellow Democrat. He is not running for a second term.

General Treasurer Gina Raimondo announced her candidacy Wednesday, joining a Democratic field that also includes Providence Mayor Angel Taveras.

Democrat Clay Pell, grandson of the late U.S. Sen. Claiborne Pell, expects to decide whether to run by the end of January.

Chafee says he's spoken to all three and will make a decision after the field is finalized.
