PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The chief of staff to former Rhode Island House Speaker Gordon Fox has stepped down.
Frank Anzeveno said in a statement Monday he cleaned out his office over the weekend "in anticipation that a new speaker needs to bring in his own staff."
Fox, a Providence Democrat, resigned Saturday after raids of his Statehouse office and home by federal and state law enforcement. It's not clear what or whom is under investigation.
Majority Leader Nicholas Mattielo says he has locked up enough votes to succeed Fox. House Oversight Chairman Michael Marcello is also running.
Anzeveno says he has known for a while Fox was not running again, though Fox had said publicly he was. Anzeveno says he planned to leave in June at the end of the session.
