WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) — Workers are putting in some extra hours to replenish the sand at Misquamicut Beach and get it ready for the summer season.

The Westerly Sun reports the town has given the contractor, MZM Construction of Newark, N.J., permission to work on Saturday's to complete the $3.1 million project before a June 1 deadline.

The penalty for not finishing by the June 1 deadline will be $2,385 per day.

The project calls for adding 84,000 cubic yards of sand to the beach to restore it to its 1960 profile.

Crews plan to have the western section of the beach complete in time for the annual Springfest celebration, which takes place May 9-11.
