Congressmen Could Be Called in Navy Kickbacks Case

Congressmen Could Be Called in Navy Kickbacks Case

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Lawyers for a woman charged in an alleged $10 million kickback scheme targeting the U.S. Navy say members of Congress could be called to testify for the defense in a federal trial due to start next month.
Mary O'Rourke is one of several people charged.

Prosecutors say one aspect of the wide-ranging scheme was that O'Rourke was paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for doing little to no work for a Navy contractor.

O'Rourke's lawyers say to the contrary that O'Rourke introduced the contractor to members of Congress and became its face in government circles. They list unnamed members of Congress from Rhode Island and staffers as people who could attest to her work.

Spokespeople for some members of the delegation say they have not been contacted in the case.
