Construction in Taveras TV Ad Unrelated to Project

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A TV ad for gubernatorial hopeful Angel Taveras suggesting work is underway on the South Street Power Station redevelopment project depicts completely unrelated construction, as the project hasn't begun.

In the ad, the Providence mayor stands on-site and says the vacant building will "soon" be a $200 million nursing school. It shows images of trucks and other equipment working by the building and Taveras seemingly reviewing plans with workers.

The construction company co-owner says the grounds are a staging area for projects elsewhere. The firm approved the filming.

A Taveras spokeswoman says the ad isn't misleading and that the construction is meant to depict a legitimate project breaking ground this fall.

GOP candidate Allan Fung recently filmed an ad declaring Rhode Island is "open for business" at an Ohio diner.
