CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — A Cranston police captain who says he was the target of a vendetta by the city's former police chief is seeking more than $5 million in damages from the city.

The Providence Journal reports Todd Patalano submitted the financial demand in a written complaint to the city clerk on Tuesday, something his lawyer said is a precursor to federal lawsuit.

Patalano says former chief Marco Palombo Jr. fabricated allegations that Patalano mishandled civilian complains of police misconduct and stole police property. In the complaint, Patalano says he and his family suffered emotional stress.

Acting chief Kevin Barry chose not to pursue those disciplinary charges.

Mayor Allan Fung says the city will defend itself against what he called "outrageous claims" by Patalano.
