CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — Cranston Mayor Allan Fung says a field of six police chief candidates has been narrowed to finalists whom he plans to interview in the coming weeks.

The Providence Journal reports Thursday the names of the finalists have not been disclosed. All are from outside the department.

Former Chief Marco Palombo Jr. was placed on leave earlier this year after the launch of an investigation into a ticketing scandal. A flurry of citations was issued in specific wards allegedly as political payback. Palombo has since retired.

Fung says in an open letter to residents this week that a six-member screening committee has been reviewing the candidates. He says each would make an outstanding chief and is committed to "moving us forward."

Fung is seeking the Republican nomination for governor.
