PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Authorities are investigating after someone left a dead seal curbside in Providence with a hand-written sign saying it was free to a good home.

The dead animal was found Monday outside a residence on Evergreen Street. WJAR-TV published on its website a picture of the sign accompanying the seal. It said, "FREE SEAL (To a good home, Naps a lot, Housebroken)."

The Providence Journal quoted a spokeswoman for the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management as saying both DEM and Providence police responded.

The paper reported the animal was turned over to the federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which took it to the Mystic Aquarium for a necropsy.
