PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Tuesday's Democratic primary for mayor of Providence will be just the beginning for the victor in the contest between City Council President Michael Solomon and law professor and former housing court judge Jorge Elorza.

The winner will face former Providence Mayor Buddy Cianci, who's running as an independent to try to win back the seat he was forced out of twice due to felony convictions.

Both Elorza and Solomon say they are the ones to beat Cianci.

Solomon says he's "the only candidate that cleaned up the mess of Buddy Cianci." He blames Cianci for underfunding the pension system and handing out benefits the city couldn't afford.

Elorza says he has built a coalition that draws from all neighborhoods in the city, and Cianci won't be able to beat him.
