Driver in deadly RI bank robbery gets 40 years

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The getaway driver in a deadly 2010 bank robbery in Rhode Island has been sentenced to 40 years in prison.

U.S. District Judge William Smith on Thursday sentenced Jose Alibal Santiago in the robbery and killing of gas station manager David Main.

Santiago, who is from the Springfield, Mass., area, was one of three people charged.

The case drew national attention after the triggerman, Jason Pleau, became the subject of a struggle over capital punishment between state and federal authorities. Pleau ultimately pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life without parole.

Santiago pleaded guilty to all charges in September during jury selection for his trial on robbery, conspiracy and using a firearm in a crime of violence.

A third defendant is set for sentencing next week.
