PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — An endangered tree kangaroo has been born at Roger Williams Park Zoo.
The zoo announced the arrival of Holly, a Matschie's tree kangaroo, on Thursday. The joey was born in October, but the zoo says she's just beginning to stick her head out of her mother's pouch. She is still too young to be examined, but they're guessing she's a girl.
The zoo says there are only 60 such kangaroos in captivity worldwide, and fewer than 2,500 in the wild.
It's the first tree kangaroo born at the zoo in more than 20 years. The zoo is putting on hold plans to open a new kangaroo exhibit until the fall.
The joey and her mother, LaRoo, are not currently on display.
