PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ The state Ethics Commission has fined a North Providence official $8,000 for taking out federal affordable housing loans meant to help low-income families.
The Providence Journal reports town controller Maria Vallee reached a settlement with the commission Tuesday and admitted improperly participating in the loan program. To be eligible, a family can make no more than $58,000. Vallee and her husband make $125,000 a year.
Federal prosecutors have said Vallee used nearly $48,000 in government loans to buy new siding, windows, a door and a new deck for her North Providence home.
Mayor Charles Lombardi says he has reviewed the commission's findings and will not fire Vallee.
Vallee has repaid the loan and settled the federal case by paying more than $78,000 in damages.
