FALL RIVER, Mass. (AP) — A Fall River husband and wife are held on charges they abused their 20-month-old daughter, who is hospitalized in critical condition.

The Fall River Herald-News reports 35-year-old Carl Taylor and 27-year-old Ora Taylor were arraigned Thursday on charges including assault and battery on a child causing serious bodily injury and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. A judge set Carl Taylor's bail at $100,000, and Ora Taylor's at $10,000.

Prosecutor Erin Aiello said their toddler is at Hasbro Children's Hospital in Rhode Island with injuries including brain bleeding and bruises.

Aiello said the Taylors called 911 on May 27, saying the girl was having breathing difficulties after apparently falling in the bathtub. Doctors also found signs of earlier injuries.

Defense attorneys said they haven't seen evidence the couple intentionally abused their child.
