PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The U.S. District Court in Providence will close early Friday so that staffers can attend the wake of a court security officer who was struck and killed by a RIPTA bus last week.

Frank McKnight was on duty and in a crosswalk when he was hit by the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority bus.

McKnight's wake will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday in North Kingstown, where he lived and where he was a police officer for 27 years. His funeral is scheduled for Saturday.

Chief Judge William Smith decided the court would close at 1 p.m. Friday.

Smith said after McKnight's death that he was concerned about pedestrian safety near the courthouse. He met with Providence officials, including the mayor and public safety commissioner, last week.
