PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A 31-year-old convicted felon has been sentenced to nearly four years in federal prison for being in possession of a firearm.

The Rhode Island U.S. attorney's office said Lazar Hazard of Providence was sentenced Thursday to 46 months. He pleaded guilty in May.

Prosecutors say police took Hazard into custody in January after seeing him allegedly sell drugs to another individual. During a search of his home, authorities found a 10-millimeter Glock pistol and ammunition, $510 in cash and items used in the packaging and distribution of drugs.

Hazard admitted the gun was his and that he had it for protection.

Authorities said Hazard had previously been convicted in state court of a crime punishable by more than one year imprisonment.

ATF agents assisted Providence police in the investigation.
