PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A former top prison guard at the ACI has been sentenced to 18 months behind bars for assaulting inmates.

Gualter Botas was convicted in 2008 along with guard Kenneth Viveiros of assault and battery for attacking four inmates in 2005 and 2006.

The Providence Journal reports the 44-year-old Johnston resident, who once was a captain and ran minimum security at the prison, apologized in court during his sentencing hearing on Thursday. He said he looks back at that time and wonders who that person was.

Botas' lawyers had asked that the sentence be reduced or that he be allowed to serve it with an electronic monitoring bracelet.

But Superior Court Judge Daniel Procaccini (prah-kah-SEE'-nee) rejected those requests, saying Botas must be held to a higher standard because of his position.
