PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A former owner of a Sears Hometown store in Middletown has pleaded guilty to a federal mail fraud charge.

The Newport Daily News reports that 53-year-old Joseph Kilty of Wakefield admitted depositing more than $154,000 in cash receipts into personal accounts, and creating false documents to make it appear the money had been sent to Sears.

He also admitted sending counterfeit bank checks totaling almost $120,000 to the Sears Hometown and Outlet office in Illinois.

Prosecutors say the fraud occurred between January 2012 and June 2013.

Kilty is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 18.
