CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) _ A 51-year-old Foster man has been charged with animal cruelty after his dog died inside a hot car last week.
WJAR-TV reports Francesco Placella left the Pinscher named Bella inside his car last Tuesday with a bowl of water and the windows cracked for about 45 minutes as he went shopping at the Wal-Mart in Cranston.
Police say an exam showed the dog died of heat exhaustion.
Placella's attorney, Mark Dana, calls the incident an honest mistake.
Placella was released Tuesday night on a $1,000 bond and is due in court on Aug. 6.
