Getaway Driver Seeks to Withdraw Guilty Plea

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The getaway driver in a deadly 2010 bank robbery in Rhode Island, now serving a 40-year prison sentence, wants to withdraw his guilty plea.

The Woonsocket Call reports an attorney for Jose Santiago has told an appeals court in Boston her client is seeking to withdraw his plea. She says U.S. District Judge William Smith in Providence didn't properly inform him of the full implications of his plea before he was sentenced in February.

The case drew national attention after the gunman, Jason Pleau, became the subject of a struggle over capital punishment between state and federal authorities. Pleau ultimately pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life without parole.

Santiago pleaded guilty to gun, robbery and conspiracy charges in September.

A third person was also convicted in the case.
