PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) _ Hundreds of Rhode Island gun owners are expected to rally at the Statehouse this week in an attempt to defeat proposals that would ban the sale of assault weapons and change the way concealed weapons permits are awarded.
The event on Wednesday is planned ahead of a House committee hearing on the bills. A Hearing in the Senate last week attracted hundreds on both sides and went into the early hours of the next day.
Rhode Island already has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. But the December school shootings in Newtown, Conn., led the governor and top lawmakers to take another look at gun violence measures.
Gov. Lincoln Chafee, House Speaker Gordon Fox and Senate President Teresa all support the legislation.
