Horse pulled from swimming pool in RI

WEST GREENWICH, R.I. (AP) — Police and firefighters are credited with rescuing a horse that fell into a swimming pool in West Greenwich.

Police Chief Richard Ramsay tells the Providence Journal that the horse apparently got out of a neighbor's yard on Monday and fell through the pool's cover.

Ramsay says a police officer put a hose around the animal's neck to keep its head above water. A fire department rescue then put on cold-water rescue gear and went into the pool, putting a sling around the horse and walking it to the shallow end of the pool.

The rescuers then attached ropes to the sling and pulled the cold and exhausted animal out of the water, where it was treated by a veterinarian.

The horse's condition was not immediately known.
