Kilmartin joins probe of Target data breach

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island's attorney general says his office has joined a multistate investigation into the massive data breach announced by retailer Target last month.

Attorney General Peter Kilmartin said Tuesday the investigation by attorneys general in multiple states aims to uncover the scope of the breach and how it occurred. He called the breach unacceptable.

Target Corp. initially disclosed that about 40 million credit and debit cards may have been affected by the security lapse between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15. The company later said hackers stole personal information from as many as 70 million customers.

Kilmartin urges all Rhode Islanders who shop at Target stores to take advantage of a year of free credit monitoring being offered by the company. He also encouraged them to change their PINs and passwords.
