PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A 25-year-old Bristol man says the town is violating his constitutional rights by requiring him to show a reason to fear injury before issuing him a permit to carry a concealed weapon.
The Providence Journal reports 25-year-old Jarren Gendreau has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court seeking the permit and an order that would prevent Police Chief Joseu Canario from denying similar requests.
Gendreau says he applied for a permit in February, 2012, citing in part a need to protect himself from bodily injury while transporting a gun collection to a target range each week.
Police denied him the permit after a hearing before a three-member panel, and renewed that decision in October after the state Supreme Court ordered the department to review the application.
