PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A 24-year-old Providence man has been charged with murder, assault and other crimes in connection with a deadly home invasion in North Providence.

North Providence police disclosed that Dari Max Garcia was arraigned on the charges Monday night at Rhode Island Hospital, where he's being treated for gunshot injuries.

Authorities say Garcia shot 26-year-old Richard Catalano and his mother during the home invasion Sunday. Catalano died, and his mother is expected to survive. Police say it appears Garcia shot himself as officers arrived.

Police released new details alleging that Garcia bit off one of Catalano's mother's fingers during a struggle and shot her in the throat.

It's not clear if Garcia has a lawyer.

Catalano's girlfriend told WJAR-TV that she believed the home invasion was over Catalano's expensive sneaker collection.
