PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Providence police say a suspect in the fatal stabbing of a former Massachusetts man last week surrendered to authorities in the parking lot of police headquarters.

Thirty-two-year-old Leon Taylor was charged with murder Monday on allegations he killed David Simmons during a fight on Dartmouth Avenue on June 9. He told a District Court judge later Monday that he was not guilty.

Taylor is being held without bail.

The 32-year-old Simmons had recently moved to Providence from Brockton, Massachusetts.

Police say Taylor fled to North Carolina after the stabbing, and U.S. marshals went there to look for him. But authorities say Taylor returned to Rhode Island on his own and surrendered to police.

Police say Taylor has a lengthy criminal record that includes gun violence and drug possession.
