Man dies in Newport truck fire

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Newport police say a 33-year-old man has died after being pulled from a burning box truck.

Firefighters were called to the truck fire on Fir Street at about 11:30 p.m. Monday and found the man inside the cab. Authorities say the man's vital signs were very low and he later died at Newport Hospital.

Police told WPRI-TV that the man was homeless and apparently was trying to say warm inside the truck. His name is being withheld until after his relatives are notified.

Authorities say they're trying to determine how the fire started. They say it appears to have been an accident.
