PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A 39-year-old Providence man was ordered held in federal custody after authorities say he took possession from an undercover agent of what he believed to be a kilogram of cocaine.

The U.S. attorney's office in Rhode Island said Jose Ignacio Goris was ordered detained Friday. He was charged with attempting to possess with the intent to distribute 500 grams or more of cocaine.

DEA agents arrested him Thursday after he allegedly took custody, inside a Cranston home improvement store, of what he thought was cocaine. It was supplied by someone he believed to be a drug dealer but was an undercover agent. Authorities say he had negotiated a price of $35,000.

Prosecutors say Goris had previously been convicted of federal drug trafficking charges.

It was not known if he's represented by a lawyer.
