WOONSOCKET, R.I. (AP) — Residents of a Woonsocket triple-decker are thanking a neighbor for running into a burning building to save them from a fire.
The Sunday afternoon blaze destroyed the four-family building. More than a dozen people lived there, but no one sustained serious injuries, and residents say that's in part because of neighbor Michael Ptaszek.
Ptaszek says he didn't even think, he just ran into the building and started knocking on doors and telling people to get out. He said he wasn't able to get past the front hallway because of thick, black smoke.
But that was enough to alert residents.
Resident Scott Tucker says his children were inside with his mother. She was taking a shower and had no idea there was a fire.
Tucker says Ptaszek saved his family's life.
