New England, NY prepare for 1st snowstorm of 2014

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Residents across New England and parts of New York are preparing for a winter storm that will bring snow and frigid temperatures to much of the region in the first week of the year.

Snow could begin to fall overnight, but the full storm isn't expected to hit until later Thursday. As much as a foot of snow or more is forecast for some areas. By Friday morning, high temperatures in some areas could near zero.

The mayor of Bridgeport, Conn., has already declared a state of emergency for Thursday, imposing special parking regulations so crews can plow.

But the additional wintry weather is welcome in some areas.

Thom Perkins of the Jackson Ski Touring Foundation in New Hampshire says business this season is up 26 percent over 2012-13.
