PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Speaker Nicholas Mattiello has pledged to focus on Rhode Island's chronically ailing economy as he takes over the House at the critical mid-point of the legislative session.
Mattiello says he'll review the state's tax structure "to see how we can help reduce the tax burden on every class," including taxes that he says impede business. The self-described pro-business Democrat also says he wants to reform or repeal what he calls overbearing regulations.
Mattiello was elected speaker Tuesday after the abrupt resignation of Gordon Fox, whose Statehouse office and home were raided by federal and state authorities last week.
The change in leadership comes as lawmakers work to craft a budget for the coming fiscal year and grapple with a proposed settlement in the legal challenge to the state's pension overhaul.
