PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island is putting up new signs on several state highways to welcome drivers to the state and encourage them to spend time here.

The large blue signs bear a new logo, the words "Discover Beautiful Rhode Island" in Colonial typography.

At the bottom of each sign are several large blocks of granite quarried in Coventry and Westerly in the 1870s.

Seven new signs are due to be installed by June 1.

The governor's office says the signs are designed to pay tribute to the state's Industrial Revolution and maritime heritage.

The signs are being installed near the state line on Interstate 95 North and South, Interstates 195 and 295, and Routes 146 and 24. One will also be included near the airport connector.
