NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Naval Station Newport and the Naval War College are among government services in Rhode Island affected by the federal shutdown.
Many administrative offices on the base were closed Tuesday morning, and base staff members were meeting to decide how to proceed.
Up to 1,000 people at the base may be furloughed. A spokesman said more details would be released later Tuesday.
Classes taught by civilian instructors are being canceled at the Naval War College and the Naval Academy Preparatory School.
The base's Department of Public Works will remain open, but the commissary will close.
