NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Newport police say a Georgia man has been charged with assault after biting his wife's lip, partially severing it.

The Providence Journal reports police said 64-year-old Amir Zaid of Stone Mountain, Georgia, was arrested Sunday on a charge of felony domestic assault. The incident took place around 2 a.m. at a bed and breakfast, the Brinely Victorian Inn.

Authorities said the couple had apparently been in town for the Newport Jazz Festival.

Police said Zaid's wife, 58-year-old Talibah Zaid, was taken to Newport Hospital, and later transferred to Rhode Island Hospital.

Rhode Island Hospital had no information on the woman's condition early Monday.
