NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Newport City Manager Jane Howington plans to step down.

The Newport Daily News reports reports Howington informed Mayor Harry Winthrop and members of the city council of her decision on Thursday, the day after the council approved its budget for the 2015 fiscal year, which begins July 1.

Howington has held the job for 2 ½ years. She declined to comment on her decision.

The mayor told the newspaper that Howington has not been happy and believes she does not have the confidence of the full council.

The council in May extended Howington's contract until Jan. 8, 2016 after it was reported that she was among the finalists for a city manager job in Ohio.
