BRISTOL, R.I. (AP) — Police say a candidate for Rhode Island governor brought an injured seal to his home, thinking he could help it, before dragging it back to the beach after an officer told him to return it.
WPRO-AM reports Friday a Bristol officer responding to an April 21 report of a seal on the beach found it in a gardening cart in Democrat Todd Giroux's driveway. The officer says he advised Giroux to return the seal, which had puncture wounds. He says Giroux dragged it on the road toward an opening in the seawall. It swam away.
State environmental officials say the matter was turned over to federal authorities. Seals are protected under federal law.
A message was left for Giroux, one of four primary candidates. He ran unsuccessfully as an independent in the 2010 governor's race.
