NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Police have dropped a rape charge originally filed against a 26-year-old Newport man after he allegedly forced his way into a woman's apartment over the weekend.

The Newport Daily News reports that Terry Lee Hilson pleaded not guilty in district court Monday to domestic willful trespassing. A judge set $2,500 surety bail.

Police told the newspaper Monday that during their investigation, there were "insufficient facts presented to bring any additional charges against Hilson at this time." Police said the case remains under investigation.

Police said they went to the apartment Saturday night after getting reports of a domestic disturbance. They said Hilson was arrested then on charges of first-degree sexual assault, breaking and entering and trespassing. A 29-year-old woman told officers he forced his way in despite a no-trespassing order and sexually assaulted her.
