WARWICK, R.I. (AP) — Warwick police say they have found a sledgehammer near where a jogger's dead body was found in a trash barrel last year.
Authorities have said 66-year-old retired postal worker John "Jack" Fay died from blunt force trauma. His body was discovered in a trash barrel in City Park last May. Fay frequently took early morning jogs in the park.
WPRI-TV reports Wednesday that police are appealing to the public for help after finding the hammer nearby. They did not identify it as the murder weapon.
Police say the head of the 10-inch hammer is unique, and it has a custom-made handle which may have once been red. Investigators believe it's an old tool that may have been taken from someone's home or toolbox.
A $25,000 reward is being offered.
