PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Providence police went "catfishing" to catch a suspect in the robbery of a pizza deliveryman.
Police Maj. David Lapatin tells the Providence Journal a Domino's employee gave them the phone number of a man who had ordered a pizza on June 16, punched the deliveryman in the face and stole his money.
Police used the number to text the man. They posed as a woman he had met in a bar and used a photo they had pulled off the Internet to strike up a conversation, a practice known as "catfishing."
Officers set up a meeting at Kennedy Plaza, where the suspect was taken into custody.
Police have charged 32-year-old Rodney Pierce of Providence with second-degree robbery. He was arraigned on Thursday and is being held without bond.
